If you live in Canada there are many opportunities to take advantage of Canada Energy Grants including federal programs, provincial programs and corporate programs.

The federal programs are run under the auspices of the Office of Energy Efficiency, created by the Government of Canada on April 1, 1998.

The Office of Energy Efficiency, under the umbrella of Natural Resources Canada, is Canada's centre of excellence for energy conservation, efficiency and alternative fuels information. The OEE offers grants and incentives and other resources to Canadians, including workshops, stats and analysis, awards and many free publications.

Their flagship program is Natural Resources Canada's ecoENERGY Retrofit program which provides financial assistance to implement energy savings projects. The program covers homes, commercial and institutional buildings and industrial facilities.

To be eligible for the ecoENERGY Retrofit program you must hire a local service organization licensed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and they will send a certified energy advisor to perform a detailed, on-site home energy evaluation.

A home energy audit costs approximately $300, however some of the provinces will subsidize the cost by up to 50% making the test only $150 plus GST.

The ecoENERGY Retrofit program provides for a maximum grant of $5,000 for homeowners. There are many eligible improvements/retrofits including replacing your heating system with higher efficiency systems; cooling system replacements; ventilation system (new installation or replacement); domestic hotwater equipment replacement and installs; installs that include ceiling insulation, exterior wall insulation, exposed floor insulation, basement insulation, basement header insulation, crawl space insulation, air sealing, doors/windows/skylights (heated space only) and water conservation (replacing toilet with a low-flush or dual-flush toilet rated at 6 litres per flush or less).
